Seeking a Change of Command

Being a Mom is truly like being a commander.  Remember the definition of deliberate planning? "..to determine the best method of accomplishing assigned tasks and to direct the action necessary to accomplish the mission.”  Sounds like a typical weekend at our house.

Only the job of being Mom doesn't end at 2 or 3 years. It goes on forever. Because it's not really a job - I'm with Shonda Rhimes on this one - being a Mom is who you are, not a job you can leave.  You can be away, but you are still Mom.  I once called home and was immediately told, "Speak to your daughter." Hmmmm.  Guess that morning was rough :-)

But when the annoyances of life pick at you it would be nice to have a change of command, wouldn't it?  Someone else to take over and make all the decisions and navigate the challenges. Someone else to be the serious one who reminds about picking up rooms, putting dirty dishes in the dishwasher, who has to lower the boom when homework is not up to snuff.  Someone else to figure out how to get everyone where they need to be, with the right equipment, forms and/or funds.  Someone else to navigate the multi-day, online-account-set-up-required, an-in-person-appointment-is-necessary byzantine process of medical care when you just. NEED. A. REFILL.  Can you guess why I am done with being an adult today?

My son has a special radar for when his Mom is DONE.  He gives me a warm hug and says, "Thanks for all you are doing for me Mom." (His recently stated life goal is to win a Tony award someday, can you tell?).  But it works.  Every time.  And I wouldn't trade him or his sister for the world.
